Throwback Thursday: Hell is Eux Autres

26 Apr

Hell is Eux AutresI know what you’re thinking: How is Eux Autres a throwback? I mean, Sun is Sunk just came out, and it’s incredible! All totally true. But Sun is Sunk is not what has been on heavy rotation in my house (I’d say medium rotation). No, dear friends, I am all of obsessed with an Eux Autres record, and it’s their very first record, Hell is Eux Autres that is a whopping 8 years old. I say that is throwback worthy, y’all!

Eux Autres, pronounced ooz-auh-tra for those Frenchily-challenged like myself, are very worthy. Last week, still reeling from seeing The Aislers Set live, I realized I cannot go the rest of my life listening to ONLY The Aislers Set (okay, maybe I can). I needed something similar, but something decidedly different, and in came Eux Autres. Actually, The Aislers Set’s drummer is provides one-half of the lead vocals! And did you know Janet Weiss produced this record? Star-studded!

Even those these babes are located way out in SF, they obviously are obsessed with French pop and the 1960s, and it shows. My favorite song on the record is “The Things They Carried” because I have never heard the Vietnam War portrayed in such a delicious, happy way before. “The Sundance Kid” is also a favorite. Heather Larimer has an adorable, buttery voice, and she is so pitch perfect sometimes that it almost makes anyone sound good singing along (*ahem* or just me… in my own head).

Throwback Thursday: The Parcels

19 Apr
the parcels

The Parcels are THE original recipe, amirite?

Last Friday I tracked down a .zip file of the amazing Have a Go With The Parcels. Who are the Parcels you might ask? They were such a scrappy, adorable trio that crafted some of my most favorite pop songs. I haven’t heard them in years; my ex-beau I think got a copy of the CD from writing to AJ years ago, but since I left Buffalo, I haven’t had a copy of it for myself. Now I do, and I am listening to it right now, happily drifting down memory lane.

“Jessica Pancakes” is an obvious nod to The Association, lifting riffs straight from the source. Normally that kinda stuff might leave a bad taste in my mouth, but The Parcels obviously makes it their own and somehow totally, completely different. “Jessica Pancakes” is such a sweet, magnificent song. So magnificent, my old band covered it and made it a part of our own repertoire, only for everyone who liked us to prefer that song to any of the jams we wrote ourselves. I can’t blame them; I feel the same way! Here’s a link to a terrible video of The Grade Grubbers covering Jessica Pancakes years ago (2007).

While “Jessica Pancakes” is the obvious hit on this record, it’s not my favorite song. I think my favorite is probably “Minor Disturbance Grrrl.” If I could figure out a way to stream this shit to y’all without breaking like a thousand laws, I would. If it’s helpful, I found a download of the record on Side Ponytail.

I do have a slight tinge of guilt having downloaded this baby. Melis, Christian or AJ: if any of you read this, please send me your PayPal email address, and I will gladly PayPal y’all lik $50 for making my life so awesome due to your awesome jams being a part of it.

Throwback Thursday: The Organ

12 Apr

fan me off, so hot.

It’s been awhile! Sorry for slacking (as if anyone even noticed). New job/the dozens of shows to go to have been harshin my blogging mellow. Life is totally hard, right?

So my BFF went to see Pulp last night (and I went to Chickfactor and saw the Aislers Set which is an entirely different entry; can’t even). She was telling me all about Jarvis’ gyrating hips, and she mentioned that she’d never been so turned on at a show. Ick-factor aside, it got me thinking: When have I been turned on at a show? And I can only think of two examples, and that is the two times I saw The Organ.

The Organ is a Canadian band that was mostly active in the early 2000s. I only discovered them because I went to a random free show in a suburb of Buffalo, and these beautiful ladies were playing and I fell in love. Grab That Gun is a haunting, pop masterpiece. Lots of elements of The Cure, Joy Division and so many pipes laid out on that record (hahah laying pipe).

Doesn’t hurt that Katie Sketch is a freaking dreamboat. I actually think she’s a working model now. Her Morrissey-inspired crooning had me transformed into a puddle. She is one of those rare frontpeople who make you feel like she’s singing right to you, whispering in your ear. Pretty electrifying stuff.

Throwback Thursday: Ben Kweller

29 Mar

Ben Kweller, “How It Should Be (Sha Sha)”

Ben Kweller was doing bathroom pics before it was cool.

You know what the only bummer about going to Puerto Rico was? I missed seeing Ben Kweller.

Ben Kweller and I go way back when. Not IRL or anything, but I used to be a really big Radish fan. Radish was Ben Kweller’s band when he was something like 15. They came out around the same time as Hanson so they had a brief stint in being featured in the Bops, 16s and Teen Beats of the day probably out of hopes to attract the frumpy Hanson fans (it worked; living proof). I was introduced to them on the Meet the Deedles soundtrack (I know, right?), and eventually got their record Restraining Bolt.

Anyway, I grew up pretty much right along side Ben Kweller. I was obsessed with his first record, Sha Sha. While I’m a fan of his newer stuff, Sha Sha is the kind of record I can listen to over and over again, reliving the memories of driving back and forth from Philly for shows, putting songs like “In Other Words” and “Falling” on mix tapes for my friends.

It’s too bad I missed him. I haven’t seen him since he opened for The Moldy Peaches in Philly at the TLA in 2002, which I went to for my birthday. One of the greatest nights of my life, duh!

Throwback Thursday: Bunnygrunt

22 Mar

Bunnygrunt, “Hometown Rockstar”

I don’t normally post live versions of songs, but this week I decided to because, well, I couldn’t find a non-live version, STFU. This song is in dedication to my dear friend Matt who recently got married and is about to visit me (we’re going to see Guitar Wolf, so stoked!). And “Homestar Rockstar” is the best song for it, for a number of reasons. Let me tell you why.

Once upon a time I was in a pop band. And no, not Bunnygrunt. It was like 2005-2007 or so, we were called The Grade Grubbers. We were released by an itty bitty CD-R label up in Sweden that is now defunct called Yellow Mica Records. Anyway, the reason why this is relevant at all is because my band was supposed to play Popfest! New England, organized by Skipping Stones Records. I don’t think any of these things even exist anymore, but we were gonna trek up to the fest with Bunnygrunt who played 99 Custer, an old punk house I used to live at, a night or two before.

This is either the exact same bass or a very similar one to the headless bass Matt played in the Grade Grubbers. #badass

But before we could get to the fest, our band broke up. Matt the bass-player, still one of my BFFs despite all this, couldn’t do it. He was in the middle of an MBA program. I know, right? I get it, but come on. Not only did we not play, but I did not go to the fest. This seems like barely a big deal now that I live in NYC and can see any twee band I freaking want practically, but at the time I lived in Buffalo, NY. The only bands I saw were the ones I personally booked and lodged myself. Check out this sweet-ass line up that year at Popfest! NE. Note THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART before they were the goddamn PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART. Heartbreaking to have missed out on this, even if I have seen most of these bands eventually.

But one consolation prize–I booked Bunnygrunt, and I played a show with Bunnygrunt, and I ate motherfucking pizza with Bunnygrunt and this was a solid group of dude(ette)s. And they were awesome, and I totally lost the rad t-shirt I got that night, but I still have the memories.

I’ve long forgiven Matt. He played a headless bass! And loves Wang Chung. Can’t stay mad.

If you want to hear my shitty-ass band, you can check out an mp3 provided by Sheets of Ten who come out with A Means to an End every few years that is an awesome compilation of the best music of Buffalo. You can find it hereeeee.

Throwback Thursday: The Ropers

15 Mar

The Ropers, “You Have a Light”

The Ropers are probably in my extremely exclusive list of top five favorite bands of all time. I actually got into them when this guy I was dating put “Revolver” on a tape. The guy wasn’t that awesome; in fact, pretty sure I only remember him because he introduced me to The Ropers.

Their masterpiece record, All The Time, was released on Slumberland way back in ’95. While an absolute classic, it has been mostly a sleeper classic in that I rarely meet people who have heard of the Ropers, which, let me tell you, is a damn shame, especially when you listen to it in comparison to the current darlings of twee, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. The influence is obvious, which in many ways just makes the Pains that much more wonderful, but I wish The Ropers had more recognition, yanno? Fortunately, Slumberland knows what’s up, and thus I had the extreme honor of seeing The Ropers play the Slumberland 20th Anniversary show back in ’09 at The Bell House in Brooklyn. So freaking amazing.

“You Have the Light” is probably my favorite track on the record, but “Revolver” and “Drive” hold extra special places in my heart as well. “You Have the Light” is absolute pure shoegazing perfection, the jangly guitar and lamenting strings hit notes that evoke a feeling that is simultaneously anxious and exuberant. It also features one of my favorite lyrical verses of all time:

There’s a secret of mine that I’ve got to keep so you think I’m smart
I know you’ve got your own so don’t you even start
Take my hand, pull my hair
Take my breath away
You know you are the only thing I think today

How perfect is this that? It’s absolutely the perfect soundtrack when pining over emerging springtime crushes. I hope you enjoy.

Throwback Thursday: Volcano I’m Still Excited!!

8 Mar

Volcano I’m Still Excited!!, “2nd Gun”

Mark Duplass

Do you know who Mark Duplass is? Who doesn’t know who Mark Duplass is, amirite? Okay, well if you don’t know, Mark Duplass is one of the godfathers of the mumblecore film movement, along side his bro Jay Duplass. Mark is best known for his work as writer and director for films such as The Puffy Chair, Baghead and Cyrus(the last two he also directed). He can currently be seen as the star of The League, an improvisational sitcom on FX.

If this guy wasn’t enough of a renaissance man, did you know he was also in Volcano I’m Still Excited!!? I totally didn’t even realize that until recently. I loved VISE!! when they first came out years ago, and haven’t really given them any thought since like, uh, I dunno, 2003.

I recently rediscovered this song, though. Also, pretty sure the “Kate” he is referring to is Katie Aselton, his wife and co-star on The League.

Throwback Thursday: Mates of State

1 Mar

Can you believe Team Boo came out *nine freaking years* ago? Neither can I. This track is still so fresh. I’ve been listening to a lot of Mates of States lately because screaming out their lyrics on the top of my lungs helps me concentrate better on work. Go figure.

Throwback Thursday: Pulp

23 Feb

Can I say something real fast? Goddamn you, Pulp. I was waiting for that second date of your reunion shows to get announced because the first date happened to land on the same night as The Aislers Set. Why did you have to go and make the second date the night before during Black Tambourine? Not cool, Pulp. Not cool.

Throwback Thursday: The Aislers Set

16 Feb

I’m still reeling from the Chickfactor 2012 announcement a few weeks back, and my heart is still aflutter from not being able to find an outlet for my dead laptop battery near Penn Station as the noon sale ticket time approached when these babies went on sale.

I’ve been kicking myself ever since I went home early during the Slumberland 20th anniversary a few years back and missed Amy Linton play with Henry’s Dress as a surprise encore. I’m a huge The Aislers Set fan, ever since an ex-boyfriend put “The Red Door” on a mixtape for me when I was 17. Powerful riffs, heavy distortion, and yet sweet as pie–that’s the stuff dreams are made of. And now thanks to Chickfactor and all who are making it happen, I will finally get to dance my ass off to those riffs live and in-person! So stoked.
